Hamilton Rejects IDPADA-G as Voice of All Afro-Guyanese at UN Forum

Minister of Labour Joseph Hamilton, speaking at the UN Forum on People of African Descent, firmly rejected claims by IDPADA-G’s Vincent Alexander, stating the group does not represent all Afro-Guyanese and accusing them of promoting divisive, unfounded narratives.

IDPADA-G does not reflect the views of all Afro-Guyanese- Hamilton tells UN forum on People of African Descent

Minister of Labour Joseph Hamilton has responded strongly to recent remarks from Vincent Alexander, the Chairman of the International Decade for People of African Descent-Guyana (IDPADA-G), who accused the government of marginalising Afro-Guyanese groups.

Minister Hamilton labeled Alexander's claims as "nonsensical”and “divisive,”arguing that they do not reflect the government's record or commitment to all Guyanese, including those of African descent.

He also criticised the use of platforms designed for serious discourse to promote narratives that he describes as “profane” and lacking factual basis.

Hamilton noted too that there is a growing sentiment among Afro-Guyanese who feel that Alexander and IDPADA-G do not represent their interests. He stated, “daily, thousands of Guyanese are saying to them, ‘you go to hell, you don’t speak for me.’”

This reflects a broader disappointment among some community members regarding their representation and advocacy.

In addressing criticisms regarding the absence of an Afro-Guyanese commissioner in the government’s delegation at the UN forum, Hamilton clarified that it was not a deliberate exclusion. He explained that Norris Whitter, a member of the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC), was originally slated to attend but withdrew at the last minute.

Minister Hamilton reiterated the government’s dedication to inclusive policies that benefit all Guyanese. He highlighted educational initiatives, such as the upcoming free tuition at the University of Guyana, aimed at positively impacting thousands of Afro-Guyanese and ensuring equitable access to education.

He stressed that the government’s policies are designed to cater to the needs of all citizens, specifying that the development initiatives are inclusive of Afro-Guyanese interests.

The comments were made during an address made by Minister Hamilton at the United Nations Permanent Forum on People of African Descent, which addresses development challenges, including those posed by modern issues like artificial intelligence, under the theme “United for reparatory justice in the age of artificial intelligence.”

From Viral Fame to ICE Custody: A Harsh Lesson in Online Power and Responsibility

Melly Mel’s journey from social media stardom to ICE custody serves as a cautionary tale about the power and pitfalls of influence. Her story raises urgent questions about cyberbullying, accountability, and the real-world consequences of toxic online behavior.

The situation surrounding Melissa Ann Holder, widely known as Melly Mel, has ignited a significant discussion about the responsibilities of social media influencers, the nature of their public persona, and the consequences of cyberbullying behavior.

Melly Mel gained notoriety not only for her content but also for her controversial behavior on social media, which some have labeled as cyberbullying. This behavior includes targeting individuals with harassment, spreading misinformation, and engaging in public shaming. Although Mrs Holder has a substantial following that she often refers to as the 592 Association, her actions have raised questions about the impact of influencers who use their platforms to harm rather than uplift.

As Holder remains in the custody of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, public reactions have been polarized. Many in Guyana and among the diaspora express solidarity with her, considering her a victim of a broader system. However, others, have used the opportunity tohighlight the harmful impact of her actions, emphasizing that her influence can have real-world implications, including emotional distress and public humiliation for those she and her followers have targeted.

Many supporters argue that the treatment of Holder by ICE raises serious concerns regarding due process and the rights of individuals in the immigration system. They argue that her detainment raises broader issues of injustice that many face, particularly within minority communities.

In recent months, there have been reports of intensified ICE raids in certain regions as part of a broader strategy to enforce immigration laws. These raids have primarily targeted undocumented immigrants, especially those with criminal records, but have also included individuals without any criminal history.

On the other hand, victims of Holder’s ire have pointed out that her social media behavior may have contributed to her current situation. Critics argue that being an influencer comes with a responsibility to engage respectfully and ethically with others and that her past actions cannot be overlooked, suggesting that accountability is necessary.

The incident has sparked discussions about the need for clearer regulations concerning online behavior, particularly for public figures. Advocates argue for a more robust framework to address cyberbullying, calling for influencers to adhere to ethical standards of conduct.

The case of Melly Mel reintroduces the potential consequences of toxic online behavior. Cyberbullying can lead to severe emotional distress for victims, and influencers in particular can amplify these effects due to their broad reach. The public opinion surrounding her situation may lead to increased scrutiny of social media influencers, with a push for regulations to hold them accountable for harmful actions.

Meanwhile local media reports say that Mrs Holder’s case is scheduled to be heard later in March by immigration judge, Francis Mwangi. This judge based on his rulings from 2019 to 2024 has a 34.1 percent decision rate in favor of asylum and other forms of relief.

Exposed - Fake News About GDF & Camp Jaguar

Fake News About Camp Jaguar Exposed

As memes go, there is a widely circulated quote beside a picture of the USA’s 16th President Abraham Lincoln that reads “Don’t believe everything you read on the internet just because there is a picture and a quote next to it - Abraham Lincoln”

“Don’t believe everything you read on the internet just because there is a picture and a quote next to it - Abraham Lincoln”

The creator of this now viral meme is a master of sarcasm and for this piece of eternal artistry deserves a tipped hat. Also on the internet today, is a well delivered tale from someone claiming to be a member of the Guyana Defence Force stationed at Base Camp Jaguar complaining about the hardships being endured while in service to this Land of Many Waters. But intelligent minds would ask why would the GDF want to deploy ranks only to mistreat them especially now when the country is plagued with discontented neighbours with uncivilized intentions.

The first priority of the Guyana Defence Force is to defend the territorial integrity of Guyana so why would the institution that was created with such vital responsibility then turn around and not adequately provide ample food and a hospitable living space and conditions for the men and women tasked with these duties.

Our information is that the GDF Quartering Administration did not and has not forsaken their mandate. Food and other supplies are delivered to Base Camp Jaguar as scheduled and meals that are prepared and served are in the keeping with best dietary practices. This will ensure each deployed person receives a balanced diet. We understand that ration included a more than adequate supply of chicken as well as fresh fish and wild meat that is hunted by a locals. We have also been informed that there is adequate access to the internet so that soldiers can communicate with their family members and loved ones. Recreational activities and sports are a fixture in the ranks daily routine and for their entertainment there is Direct TV. There was an issue that was reported with the non-functional water pump but that is being addressed. And there is adequate lighting.

Is life a bed of roses during deployment? Probably not. However, from all indications there is no wanton disregard for the men and women who are dedicating their lives to the safety and security of all Guyanese.

Our advice, if you have an issue report it within the command, give them an opportunity and time to make it right.

Turning the Tide | Guyana's Contribution to Haiti's Shift towards Stability

Amidst the efforts to foster stability in Haiti, former Chief of Staff Dr. Gary Best's remarks appear misdirected and lacking in nuance. His criticism of President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali's diplomatic initiatives reflects a narrow perspective, overshadowing the collective goal of restoring peace. In the face of complexity, Dr. Best's comments risk undermining broader efforts for Haiti's recovery.

After months of instability fueled by gang violence, and the deaths and injury of thousands of Haitian people the demand for the resignation of Prime Minister Dr Ariel Henry has been heeded.

The resignation was announced to the world by current Chairman of the Caribbean Community (Caricom), Guyana’s President HE Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali who was in Jamaica last week with other Caricom leaders, the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, and other officials.

It was also announced that a presidential council which would "hold relevant and possible powers of the Haitian presidency during the transition period until an elected government is established”.

These terms, although not quite the “Haitian-led solutions” called for from one of the main gang leaders responsible for much of the unrest in the French-speaking nation have been accepted.

According to international news reports, Jimmy “Barbecue” Cherizier has said he was going to call for a truce to evaluate the situation.

Stability returning to Haiti

“If Ariel Henry resigns, I think we are going to call for a truce just to evaluate the situation, just to allow the negotiations to take place between all sectors of society and the armed groups,” said Barbecue.

This would seem like the best possible outcome at this time. This was not the time for grandstanding or heroics as what was needed was an immediate solution to the violence and volatility in Haiti.

So then why would a former Chief of Staff of the Guyana Defence Force, with a Doctorate of Philosophy on International Relations interpret this situation as anything but a victory for the people of Haiti. Why would he describe the tireless hours of planning, strategizing, and negotiations for a chance of healing for Haiti as a “squandered opportunity” for President Irfaan Ali.

Could this former freed drunk driver (and accused agent of manslaughter), have another motive for attacking the President?

Perhaps it is simply a case where the reportedly inebriated doctor is employing the school yard tactic that says to attack the biggest person on the playground to raise your own profile. Is Dr Gary Best trying to gain mileage for a some kind of run within his clearly lost political party or does he plan to break away and form his own party and is using every possible platform to “make noise”?

Inspire of this noise, Guyanese and the world have not been fooled and continue to see President Ali remains a giant among men because he knew that goal of the Caricom and all international partners remains to return Haiti to stability and on the path to prosperity.

Informed Guyanese also know that this is not the time to cherry-pick wins when the alternative would be continued suffering for our brothers and sisters in Haiti.
